Private Pilot Private Practice Exam

The term that describes a pilot's attempt to maintain visual contact with the terrain in low visibility is scud running. This practice involves flying just above the terrain in order to stay below the clouds and maintain visual reference with the ground. It is often employed when weather conditions are not conducive to safe flying but is risky due to potential obstacles and terrain features that may not be visible until the last moment.

Scud running carries inherent dangers, as pilots might underestimate the risks associated with flying close to the ground, especially in areas with varying terrain or obstacles such as trees, power lines, or buildings. It's important to understand that this technique should be used with caution, and pilots are generally advised to seek better weather conditions or rely on instruments when visibility is severely limited.

Understanding this concept helps highlight the critical importance of maintaining situational awareness and adhering to regulations regarding visibility and flight safety.
